Connor Scott is playing in brambles-near his dad Lee's home in Tonge Fold, Bolton, with his friends Tom Rhodes, five, and Mark Harrison, eight, blissfully unaware that the brambles cover a 10ft slope down to the River Tonge.

Suddenly, Connor loses his footing and plunges down a 4ft vertical drop into the river. The water temperature is nearly zero, and even though the river is not very fast moving, Connor is in real danger.

Tom runs home for help.
