Summary
NOW that the history of the slave trade is to be taught in schools in England, can we expect lessons to include the fact that, between 1530 and 1870, an estimated 1.5 million white Christians were made slaves by the Muslim corsairs of North Africa? The slaves were taken from passing ships and captured during raids on coastal areas including Cornwall and many other areas of Britain and the continent. They were sold in slave auctions in ports including Tripoli, Algiers, Sale and Tunis.
Sultan Moulay Ismail was a particularly brutal tyrant and many slaves came to a cruel end under his hand. Many books have been written from accounts by people who witnessed the extreme cruelty of the time and they are easily found.See the full content of this document
