Britain is in the grip of a maniacal recycling drive that has already seen people fined and created the first 'recycling martyrs'.

Slowly but surely, our refuse - all 300 million tons of it a year - has fallen into the hands of zealots. It can only be a matter of time before someone goes to prison for failing to cut out the window from an envelope, or the heinous crime of mixing glass and tin.
