TONY ADAMS tries to explain why this will be his first and last interview as manager of Portsmouth. 'I don't actually like people,' he says.

'I'm a loner and if I had my way I'd just walk my dogs every day, never talk to anyone and then die.' This from a man who has just raved about the 'amazing woman' he married three years ago. Surely he would not exclude her? 'Oh I would,' he says. 'And she knows that. She knows what I'm like. But I need to make the effort. I realise that.' There is a mischievous look in his eye as he sits behind his desk at the club's training ground. He is waiting for a reaction. Wondering what the next question might be. I suggest he is a bit of an eccentric.

'Fantastic!' he says, doubling up with laughter. 'That's brilliant. I love that. I wish I was but I'm not sure I am. You might find me a little bit weird, I suppose. But eccentric? I think it's got a place in society. I'd love it if I had a nutty aunt or a nutty grandad. I think it's got its place. It would be wonderful at Christmas.

'But I'm taking this as a compliment. What's the definition of eccentric? Is that better than weird? I guess it is. I have a quick mind. Arse...
