SOME eight months after his departure from Downing Street, Alastair Campbell's influence within the Labour Party seems to grow rather than diminish. At the party's annual gala dinner (menu: salmon terrine, fillet of beef and passion fruit souffle) at London's Park Lane Hilton, it was the excommunications director turned raconteur who was the star turn. Jazz singer Jamie Cullum and even Tony Blair, who brought laughter (or was it pity?) with remarks in which he noted that things had not been going all his own way recently, were outshone by Campbell.
