ENGLISH football's summer exodus to America may serve as a further indication of the Premiership's desire to tap a lucrative commercial market, but for the managers and players heading west this week the United States will also offer an appealingly reclusive way of preparing for a new season.

For example, Manchester United's decision to visit Seattle, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and New York last summer was financially driven and born of a commitment to their sponsors Nike. This time, however, their decision to return was motivated largely by football reasons.
