THERE is more fun to be had in ITV's boardroom at the moment than in ITV1 primetime. Chairman Sir Peter Burt is back from his golf trip to the US, prompting dealers to speculate that the end is nigh for boss Charles Allen.

Renewed talk of a takeover bid even did the rounds. Rumour has it that Roger Parry, chairman of Yorkshire Post owner Johnston Press, has teamed up with private equity group Permira to have a tilt at the broadcaster. The pair unsuccessfully stalked CD seller HMV earlier this year. However, with Parry still in Australia, a bid any time soon looks unlikely.
