Given the number of difficult teenagers around, it is surprising anyone chooses to have children in the first place. Emmerdale's 15- year-old Debbie has just given birth, and EastEnders' Demi (who had a baby at 13) is planning to run away with Leo. In Hollyoaks, if you don't have a tough life as a teenager, you are a freak, and Coronation Street's Rosie is hilariously growing into the sublime teenager from hell. She is still dressing and making-up as a Goth, to the despair of Sally, who has spent a fortune on her private education.

Soap's youngsters have always been difficult. Coronation Street's Tracy was a monstrous teenager who grew into a monstrous adult, and the teenage Steve was never out of trouble. EastEnders' Michelle got pregnant by Dirty Den and never had the best of relationships with mum Pauline. And Emmerdale's Kelly, who returns on Friday, was a conniving, spiteful little minx, who also managed to get herself pregnant.
