GORDON Brown may have to slash thousands more Civil Service jobs in order to meet his promised efficiency savings in Whitehall and fund Labour's spending plans, it was claimed last night.

Treasury figures revealed that the Chancellor underestimated the cost of staffing and administration in the Government machine last year by Pounds 1billion.
