LAST Sunday's Panorama was entitled Scotland's Secret Shame. The subject was sectarianism, with particular reference to the Old Firm, and the phrase is Jack McConnell's. There were interviews with the chairmen of Rangers and Celtic, with the historian Tom Devine, with doctors in the accident and emergency ward of a Glasgow hospital and with assorted Glaswegians.

The tribal songs were sung and there was a good deal of blood, with shots of victims who had been carved up or had broken bottles shoved in their faces.
