Summary
HE IS one of hurling's most experienced hurling coaches and also one of its most celebrated, but semi-finals have proved to be Justin McCarthy's downfall. In a career spanning 40 years - he took over Antrim in 1969, five years before he retired as an inter-county player - he has trained, coached or managed teams in seven All- Ireland semifinals, winning just once, and that was when his Cork side were massive favourites to beat Antrim in 1984. Tomorrow, he will manage a team for the fifth time in a semi-final this decade and hope that he can break the Liam McCarthy curse that has already seen him lose four semi-finals in the 'Noughties' as manager of Waterford. Here we take a look back at how the Limerick manager's previous efforts at trying to reach the decider ended, mostly, in failure.
