IN late August 1984, a cub reporter in the Irish Press rang the English FA at Lancaster Gate and asked to be put through to Bobby Robson, the England manager.
With the Republic of Ireland about to play the Soviet Union in a World Cup qualifier in Dublin, the reporter was seeking Robson's views on the Soviets, who had played England earlier that summer at Wembley, winning 2-0.
