THOUGH no doubt he has the best intentions, not least to cheer us up in these gloomy times, as a conservative, I find Boris Johnson's St George's Day plans grotesque.

England is not a nation: it ceased to be one in the 18th century. The illusion of nationhood in Britain is perpetuated mostly by separate sports teams, myths and devolution. Regional differences are no greater between home nations than they are internally.
