THE remnants of Hurricane Katrina blew through New York yesterday and helped Lleyton Hewitt breeze into the second round of the U.S. Open.

While his opponent Albert Costa struggled to control the spin on his shots and the giant Stars and Stripes flag above Arthur Ashe Stadium rattled constantly against its pole, Hewitt was calmness personified. The No 3 seed feasted on Costa errors in his 6-1, 6-2, 6-1 tiptoe through 50mph gusts of wind.
