Author STEPHEN FOSTER was no dog lover and when he adopted a lurcher he found out the hard way that they aren't always man's best friend. Here, he describes how he finally brought Ollie to heel

Ollie is a lurcher. But he is half Saluki, an Arab breed, which makes him a bit posher than your average lurcher - but insane. When we picked him up I knew nothing of Ollie's Saluki side. At that point he was just a scrap of a pup. And a dog was no part of my life plan, not least because of nature. The animal needs a run, and this is the most alarming aspect of dog ownership: you are forced into direct contact with nature. It has long grass, is unstructured, often slippery underfoot, and has insects and small animals living in it.

Lurching Towards Love

It's not the exercise that bothers me. Gym, squash court, five- aside pitch, swimming pool - I'm addicted to the lot, but of course I don't walk there. I drive. And, without a dog, I cannot see why a human should ever need to be in a meadow or any other messy green area.
