MAYBE if you were fighting for professional survival against Basil Brush, you'd take your chances in the jungle, too. This time last year, when Christopher Biggins was invited to tread the boards in Aladdin at Nottingham indeed, to direct the whole shebang he was told by those who held the purse strings that the number one star of the show would be Claire Sweeney, the former Brookside actress.

She was young, pretty and in the news, and since Biggins was a rotund, middle-aged man with a mortgage to pay, he accepted that such is showbiz.

It was a different matter, however, when he learned that Basil Brush would be joining them. To have to share billing with a fox was beyond the pale. 'For the record, when we opened it was Claire Sweeney, me, then Basil Brush,' he points out. 'But for a while it was a worry, yes. I had to fight for that billing.' He tells it all in a very jolly manner, but it was clearly wearisome. So much so that he did the unthinkable.

He bowed out of panto this year, choosing instead to put his career and more up for the pub...
