HER genius was in articulating not only the dreams, but also the anger and frustrations of millions. Bold enough always to speak her mind, brave enough to take on the powerful, hers was a uniquely effortless style which stripped away the phoneyness of those who seek to impress.

The death yesterday of Lynda Lee-Potter robs every one of us of a voice to which you just had to listen. Her views, often trenchant, sometimes sentimental, always compellingly readable, were based on her own rich experience of life, from its council house beginnings to the large and beautiful country house where she died surrounded by her family.

Her brilliance was in putting into simple words what legions of ordinary people were thinking - people without a platform of their own, people whom she loved and with whom she identified and who, she believed, relied on her to speak up on their behalf.

Of those she criticised, she said: 'I never worry about hurting people's feelings. If you have that anxiety you really shouldn't be doing this job.'

She meant, of course, the feelings of those who had grown rich and powerful, or attained high political office, on the back of the public's goodwill.

These were the people whose pomposity Lynda loved to prick, the reality of whom she saw it as her duty to expose.
