THE British rebate was won by Margaret Thatcher in 1984 after she declared: 'I want my money back.' Her furious cry at the Fontainebleau summit was the climax of a five-year struggle to persuade EU leaders that Britain was paying an unfair financial penalty for membership of the then European Community.

Mrs Thatcher, in one of her most famous 'handbaggings', declared that unless the UK was granted a rebate on its contributions to Brussels, she would veto any further expansion of spending.
