WE HAVE a carpet with such a very intricate pattern that, in different lights, it produces numbers, letters and even images. Today, in sunlight, the number three suddenly appeared.

Should I buy a scratchcard from the number three box in my local paper shop? I did and -- voila! -- it won [pounds]10. The question is: do we possess a magic carpet? I am flying off on it to meet the Caliph of Baghdad, who will doubtless confirm my suspicions. If I can avoid the evil Grand Vizier (and Customs) on the return journey, our carpet should fetch millions at Sotheby's (eat your heart out, Damien Hirst). To think that we have been trampling over this priceless object for years.
