SPRING has arrived early; already there is frogspawn in the pond, I saw two butterflies in February, a yellow brimstone and a red admiral - and now a pair of magpies are nesting in my garden.

They are beautiful birds and instantly recognisable; at first they appear to be simply black and white, but when the sun catches their feathers the black shines with a beautiful metallic blue sheen.
