MARIA FRIEDMAN will be able to tuck her two young sons into bed only on Sunday nights for the foreseeable future. You see, Maria is the star of Andrew Lloyd Webber's haunting musical The Woman In White, and for six nights a week she's on the Palace Theatre's stage, giving what I believe to be the the most breathtaking performance in London at the moment.
'Andrew came to see me when I was doing my one-woman show in New York and said: "I'm going to create the most tremendous part for you,"' she recalled, when we talked in her dressing room recently. 'Naturally, I thought he was just saying that.' But back in London, she flicked through the script and found that her character, Marian Halcombe, was a very different one from the rather unattractive woman in the Wilkie Collins source novel.
