RETAIL conglomerate GUS surprised the market by announcing it has received bid approaches thought to be from the private equity sector.

American giants Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and Hellman Friedman are known to have run the slide rule over the company, which runs Argos, Homebase and the credit checking firm Experian.
