JOHN McCain began a comeback bid last night by outlining a string of tax cuts to win over hard-up voters and reignite his flagging White House campaign.

But the 72-year-old Republican faced a setback as a U.S. poll revealed Barack Obama was leading in Ohio, Florida, Virginia and Missouri and was neck and neck with Mr McCain in North Carolina.
