WE'RE coming to a point where the fight is for the survival of the republicanism of Fianna Fail.' Such are the words of John McGuinness, the highly regarded junior minister sensationally sacked from the Department of Enterprise this week. It is a warning Brian Cowen would be well advised to take very seriously. Mr McGuinness is no attention-seeker and harbours no ambitions for his party's leadership, but his revelation of the depths of frustration at all ranks inside Fianna Fail hits very close to home.

The disillusionment with Brian Cowen has been simmering for a long time. Always something of a bruiser and a man who tends to cultivate a close circle of insiders at the expense of others, the murmurings against the Taoiseach set in as soon as he took over last summer.
