ALEX McLEISH received the ultimate helping hand last night when the SPL agreed to postpone both matches featuring the Old Firm on the weekend before Scotlands showdown with Italy. Up to 10 Celtic and Rangers players will now be as fit and fresh as possible for the November 17 clash at Hampden, in which victory will secure Scotlands place at the Euro 2008 Finals after a decade-long absence from a major tournament. Although key men like Barry Ferguson, Stephen McManus, Scott Brown and Alan Hutton will be on Champions League duty on November 6 and 7 against Barcelona and Benfica, the postponements of SPL games will allow them up to 10 days to prepare for the visit of the Azzurri. McLeish said: Its great news. We really pushed for it. The managers were behind us all the way. It frees up about 10 players and, while I was never worried about match sharpness, it makes sure these players dont get injured.

It is a real boost, a fantastic bonus, and we really appreciate it. I will need to ask if Sir Alex Ferguson can cancel Manchester United games, as well, or Derby. Despite bowing to McLeishs request, SPL executive chairman Lex Gold couldnt resist firing a volley at the SFA for refusing to meet the costs of postponing Celtics game with Falkirk at Parkhead on Saturday, November 10, and St Mirrens visit from Rangers, which was to be shown live on Setanta the following afternoon.
