ALEX MCLEISH hailed James McFadden as a potential [pounds]5million bargain, but insists he needs to prove his worth on a more regular basis. The Birmingham striker eyes a first-team return today against his former club Everton after missing the past three weeks following a knee operation. The St Andrew's boss raised a few eyebrows when he bought McFadden during the January transfer window, but insisted: 'In Premier League terms, he's probably a bargain. James has shown that he is promising to be a player worth much more than that. I always said we needed an extra bit of quality and he has provided that. I'm glad we got him.' Aware that his side are still struggling to get away from the relegation zone, McLeish added: 'Other players have raised their games and, if he comes back to the team, he will give everyone a boost.'

Everton have their own injury problems with Mikel Arteta being asked to play through the pain of a mystery injury to try to safeguard a European place. Manager David Moyes admitted his concerns over a stomach ailment that has troubled Arteta for weeks and, so far, confounded medical experts in England and Spain.
