AN electrifying quarter-final between Roger Federer and Andy Roddick brought the crowd to their feet on a balmy Florida evening and showcased all that is good about men's tennis.

Yet this engrossing clash of styles, won by Federer, and the astounding athleticism of both players also raised what is an increasingly awkward question: how come they are only paid the same as the women? It is a pure statement of fact that the men's tournament here has, yet again, massively outshone that of the women. Aside from the injured Nikolay Davydenko, the eight top players in the world came through to form a stellar quarter-final line-up.
