HOW OFTEN does anyone think, after meeting a 'highprofile' person, 'I wish I'd said suchand-such a thing'? I was among a large crowd of spectators (in civvies) at Dover seafront in 1994, to see Countess Mountbatten of Burma unveiling a memorial to service and civilian personnel of East Kent who had died or were injured during World War II, when a youngish, good-looking major-general came bounding over to me from a host of VIPs.
