Summary

IF St Patrick's Athletic had one eye towards their Europa League clash with Steaua Bucharest on Thursday then it proved very costly last night.

United's teenage goalkeeper Aaron McCarey was probably the main reason why the sides must go through it all again as the 17-year- old dealt with everything the Saints threw at him. St Pat's produced some impressive spells of football but were denied what would have been a top class goal in the 39th minute when McCarey pushed away a fine effort from Damien Lynch. Mark Quigley was the most potent player on show, but he fired narrowly wide two minutes after the break. Then McCarey had to be at his best to stop Quigley's 63rd- minute strike. Monaghan had a chance to steal the win in the 80th minute when Karl Bermingham released Cathal O'Connor but Saint's 'keeper Gary Rogers made a crucial save to deny the midfielder.
