HIGH on the hills near the rugged splendour of the Boca do Inferno, the westernmost point in mainland Europe, where huge columns of crashing waves smash against startling, jagged rocks, is a quite gorgeous villa. It looks down on this scene and along the windswept, deserted beaches at Guincho, the pristine sand broken only by the sight of the occasional lonely soul taking advantage of conditions that are close to a surfer's paradise. The villa is constructed over a number of levels, each landscaped and designed to best capture the view and some stunning sunsets. To the north are the hills and the town of Sintra, medieval and mysterious, below, a handful of Portugal's finest, and most expensive, restaurants. The villa, said my taxi driver, belonged to Sven Goran Eriksson. That same day it was announced he had joined Notts County.
So either Eriksson is a man so completely besotted by football that he turned his back on a life of luxury to buy into the fantasy of restoring the oldest professional club in the world, or he was captivated by something altogether more finite and bankable.
