AT A weekly Pilates class, its members share the most intimate of confidences and CLARE CAMPBELL listens in. This week, Ros tells how she accidentally discovered that her husband, Will, once slept with her best friend, Sarah, when they were all at college together. Even though this happened long before Ros and Will became an item, Ros is still very upset. She says: EVEN though it happened more than ten years ago, I can't stop thinking about my husband and best friend in bed together and it still feels like such a betrayal. There are so many questions I want to ask -- such as, why didn't Will or Sarah ever tell me about it themselves? I'd never have found out if I hadn't met Vanessa, a mutual friend, for lunch last week. We were talking about university and who'd slept with who, when Vanessa mentioned a party she'd been to where Will got off with Sarah.
I was shocked, but I didn't want Vanessa to realise I was upset and so pretended to know all about it. Then, as I was desperately trying to change the subject, Vanessa asked me casually: 'Don't you mind? I don't think I'd like the idea of my husband having slept with my best friend.' I knew Vanessa was probably trying to make trouble. But it didn't stop her words from distressing me. The worst part was the discovery that Will and Sarah had a secret, giving them an intimacy I really resented. That evening, I confronted Will as soon as he came home from work.
