Myvintage escape DURING the Dunkirk evacuation (Letters), I was a Royal Army Service Corps ambulance driver and on May 24, 1940, Colonel Dan McVicar RAMC called me to his staff car, a Hillman 14, and ordered me to drive him to the nearest airport.

He wanted to catch a plane for the UK, so he could avoid being captured by the Germans. The two rear passenger footwells of his car were crammed full of bottles of French red wine, encased in straw sleeves.
