Lord THE Navy will have to cut its fleet of warships in the coming years as defence spending is squeezed, the most senior naval officer admitted yesterday.

But the First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Alan West, insisted new and more powerful warships would maintain the fleet's fighting power.
