MY FATHER worked his entire life for his Civil Service pension. He didn't change his job, even though at least one better one was offered, because he wanted to be absolutely certain that he and my mother would enjoy the last years of their lives in comfort dreaming of a rose garden and a view of the sea as he did so.

Sadly, he didn't live long enough to enjoy every one of those years but, to this day, my mother still enjoys the benefits of his pension and it's kept her in comparative comfort throughout the years since he left the Civil Service in 1976.
