MARTIN O'NEILL will turn down a Pounds 2.5million-a-year offer from Newcastle United in favour of becoming the next England coach - providing Brian Barwick can persuade his FA colleagues that the ex- Celtic boss is the right man to succeed Sven Goran Eriksson.

Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd will this week make an official approach to O'Neill, and is prepared to make him one of the best- paid bosses in the Premiership.
