THIS weekend is Brian Cowen's very last chance to turn the tide. He must use the traditional platform his Ard Fheis address gives him not only to rally the party faithful behind him, but to restore public confidence in himself and in his Government. It is a huge task; based on the latest poll findings, Fianna Fail could lose up to 100 council seats in this summer's local elections and would face decimation in a general election.
It is in the very nature of economic crises to develop terrifying momentum: as jobless figures rise, as pickets appear on the streets, as public revenues dwindle without any apparent decisive action, so businesses, investors and consumers lose confidence and economic activity shrinks further.See the full content of this document
