Summary

NORTHERN Rock raises the rate on its Online Silver Savings account from Saturday, paying 5.04 pc after 20 pc savings tax (6.3 pc before tax). Open to those age 50 and over only, minimum balance is 1. It guarantees at least to match Bank of England base rate currently 5.75 pc until January 31, 2010. Monthly income seekers will see 4.9 pc (6.13 pc).

The rate puts it marginally ahead of Sainsbury's Internet Saver paying 5 pc (6.25 pc), an account open to those aged 18 or over. It pays interest annually and there is no monthly interest option.
