At the live broadcast of American Idol - the Stateside version of Pop Idol - we are a minute from going on air when disaster sets in. Paula Abdul, one of the show's judges who appears on the programme in a near constant state of high emotion, is nowhere to be seen when the order comes from across the studio to remove her chair. The audience starts murmuring, keen to seize on whatever scandal might be going on behind the scenes of America's number-one show, when suddenly, with just 20 seconds to go, in comes Paula looking somewhat wobbly. Her chair is brought back in, and everyone - especially Simon Cowell, for whom an evening without a spot of Paulabaiting is just not an evening - breathes a sigh of relief.
