IT'S very frustrating to be turned away or shortchanged on production of Scottish banknotes. But there is an answer and a reason for this. I recall several incidents during time spent in Paris in 1994-5 where banks were not quite sure what sort proposed pension of currency I was presenting them.

I shall never forget the quizzical look on a senior bank teller's face upon examination of a Clydesdale Bank note adorned with 'rats'& of all things! What confused him even more was that every second bank note appeared to come from another Scottish bank and was printed in a different style. I was finally able to convince him that the different Scottish banks are permitted to print their own notes.
