THE American government chose the day oil set a new record of $100.09 a barrel in the US to announce it is rolling back one of the last exploration frontiers by auctioning drilling rights off Alaska.

The Minerals Management Service will auction off licences for the Chukchi Sea on February 6. It estimates the 46,000 square mile exploration area could contain 15bn barrels of oil.
