THE COLLAPSE of talks with the Greens makes it increasingly improbable that Taoiseach Bertie Ahern will be able to cobble together an administration in advance of Thursday's opening session of the 30th Dail. That prospect will inevitably send shivers down those spines that are old enough to have been fully formed in the chronically unstable world of 1980s politics.

But it should not. Any administration that included the Greens would, as this newspaper has consistently argued, have been inherently unstable. An administration that attempted to marry the Greens and the PDs would have been just about as volatile a mix as it is possible to imagine around a cabinet table.
