LET'S dispel the myth that as North Sea oil and gas depletes, Scotland will become oil and gas poor and will be incapable of achieving and sustaining independence as a sovereign nation. Data from the Department Of Trade And Industry's Energy Resources and Development Unit indicates there are significant Scottish oil and gas resources.

According to the DTI: 'As a general rule, the Central and Northern North Sea areas can be considered as those off the Scottish coast', as can the reserves off the Scottish Atlantic seaboard (west of Shetland). The following calculations are based on 2005 data.
