I USUALLY derive a certain amount of innocent amusement from most of Michael Winner's rantings, but his anti-French diatribe (Mail) was unfair.

I have travelled the length and breadth of France over the past 20 years and have encountered an extraordinary understanding and helpfulness on a level I can guarantee you a Frenchman would be highly unlikely to find in Britain.

Our Trips to France Are Always Cordiale

We once stopped off at a restaurant in the heart of Burgundy which we knew to have something of a fine reputation.

Even though we were wearing casual travelling gear, the welcome from the maitre d' on down was a courteous as could be.

It was only just before leaving, after enjoying a memorable meal, that we were told the restaurant held the coveted crown of three Michelin stars.
