NEARLY half of Scotland's new babies last year were born to mothers aged 30 or over amid a growing trend for women to have their children later in life.

The number of births north of the Border in 2008 was the highest for 13 years - but the proportion of mothers in their teens and 20s was at its lowest since the 1950s.
