ONE of my friends is so worried about swine flu that she logs on daily to Flu Wiki, a website devoted to the concerns of people convinced that a pandemic more deadly than the Black Death is imminent.

Another friend has no time to fret about global pandemics. She's far too busy worrying about the diet and development of her three- year-old son. The child eats organic only. His mother has dedicated her existence to ensuring that nothing 'contaminated' passes his lips.

At a recent end-of-term nursery party, I watched this poor boy nibble on rice cake and raw carrot washed down with mineral water, while the other kids tucked into the party grub.
