EARLY to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.' So wrote the great philosopher and scientist Benjamin Franklin two centuries ago - and so right thinking men and women have been saying ever since.

It is common wisdom - at least in our society - that being up with the dawn, doing a day's hard work and then retiring at a godly hour with a cup of Horlicks is the key to success.
