THE article Pandemic Will Claim 75,000 Lives In The UK (Mail) may have caused concern among some readers that (as you put it) 'Britain is poorly prepared for an inevitable disease pandemic' and that 'Britain's disease control systems are run by too many parallel organisations and are poorly co-ordinated'. This not what the report of the House of Lords Intergovernmental Organisations Committee says.

The Committee's inquiry was not into the state of Britain's defences against infectious diseases, but into the effectiveness of the intergovernmental organisations which are charged with this task. Indeed, our report commented that Britain, along with many other countries, has effective disease surveillance systems.
