SHE can still barely walk, and not without considerable pain. But at least the feeling has now returned to her legs. For a time, she was almost completely paralysed from the waist down - the only movement she had was in her toes.

Even so, it will be weeks, possibly months, before Leslie Ash will be well enough to leave London's Wellington Hospital. Friends say that she has never 'been more isolated, lonely or down'.

'Normally she is full of life, but she seems much, much lower at the moment, and it's not just because she is ill,' said one.

Miss Ash, 44, is recovering from the ravages of a bacterial infection that attacked her nervous system after she was treated for a punctured lung and cracked rib back in April. Those are the bare medical facts.
