Summary

JAPANESE scientists have devised a synthetic tooth enamel, which can repair early tooth decay without the need for drilling and fillings, and with less damage to patients' teeth.

Dental cavities are usually fixed by removing the decaying part of the tooth then filling it with either resin or metal alloy. But researchers believe they can bypass this by using the new paste, which they say can also strengthen natural enamel, helping to prevent cavities returning. In the earliest stages, tooth decay is microscopic, but left unchecked, bacteria in tiny cavities destroy tooth enamel, creating deeper cavities, which could eventually lead to the tooth being removed.
