Summary

A MAN who survived surgery at a leading hospital died after catching MRSA. An inquest into Thomas Barrett, 56, heard how he was making good progress following bowel surgery at the Mater Hospital in Dublin, but died a month and a half later after contracting the killer superbug.

It was only after he was moved to isolation after being identified as a carrier of MRSA that the superbug spread to his blood and heart, causing two heart attacks. Dublin City Coroner's Court heard yesterday how Mr Barrett, of Ballymun, Dublin, was admitted to the Mater on November 30, 2007 for emergency surgery.
